Find the right DMT system category for your experiment

DMT systems support different ex vivo workflows. The easiest way to choose the right category is to start with the biological preparation and the primary measurement endpoint.

This overview explains, at a glance, the difference between wire myographs, pressure myographs, organ bath and isolated tissue systems, and muscle strip or tissue mechanics systems.

Start with four questions

  • Is the preparation a vessel, tissue strip, organ segment or muscle?
  • Do you need force, diameter, pressure, flow or tensile strength?
  • Should the sample be ring-mounted, cannulated, clamped or suspended?
  • Is the priority physiology, pharmacology, mechanics, teaching or throughput?

The four main DMT system categories

Each category is built around a different experimental geometry and measurement principle.

Wire myographs

Mounted vessel rings under isometric conditions

Wire myographs are used when isolated vessels or smooth muscle preparations are mounted on wires or pins and force is measured under controlled isometric conditions.

Pressure myographs

Intact vessels under controlled pressure

Pressure myographs are used when a vessel should remain cannulated and pressurized, allowing diameter, wall mechanics, flow and pressure-dependent function to be studied.

Organ bath and isolated tissue systems are used when tissue viability, force measurement, chamber conditions and reproducible mounting are central to the experiment.

Organ Bath and Isolated Tissue Systems How does an isolated tissue respond to drugs, stimulation or physiological conditions? Vessels, trachea, intestine, bladder, uterus, skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle and other isolated tissues. Force response, contraction, relaxation and pharmacological reactivity. Muscle Strip and Tissue Mechanics Systems How does tissue generate force, respond to stretch or fail under mechanical load? Muscle strips, vascular tissue, tubular tissues and other mechanically tested preparations. Force transients, length-tension, tensile strength, compliance, stiffness, viscoelasticity and contraction kinetics. Practical selection guide

In most cases, the right DMT category becomes clear when you define the endpoint first.

Choose wire myography if...

You want to measure vascular force responses from ring-mounted vessels, compare contraction and relaxation curves, assess endothelial function or run pharmacological reactivity studies.

You need the vessel to remain intact and pressurized, and your endpoint depends on diameter, flow, wall mechanics, pressure response or vessel imaging.
