Measuring What Holds Life Together

Dr. Janine Meienberg and Valeria Turco

At the Center for Cardiovascular Genetics and Gene Diagnostics in Switzerland, Dr. Janine Meienberg and Valeria Turco investigate rare inherited connective-tissue disorders that can weaken the aorta and place patients at risk of severe vascular events.

Their work uses murine aortic samples to measure the maximum force the tissue can withstand before rupture. This provides a direct, quantitative way to compare healthy and diseased vessels, as well as treated and untreated samples.

Three DMT Tissue Puller systems support the team’s work with small, delicate aortic preparations, helping them obtain reproducible rupture-force measurements under controlled liquid conditions.

Behind the research

What each Lab Spotlight explores

The series connects scientific questions with practical experimental work and the researchers responsible for moving the field forward.

01

The research question

The disease mechanism, physiological process or scientific problem driving the laboratory’s work.

02

The experimental approach

The tissue preparation, measurement endpoint, instrumentation and workflow used to generate meaningful data.

03

The people behind the work

The researchers, trainees and collaborators whose curiosity, persistence and expertise make the science possible.
